Boynton-McKay Food Co. is a restaurant on Main St. in Camden, Maine, in what was for many decades, the town’s primary drug store, apothecary and soda fountain.

Boynton-McKay Drug Co. was established in 1893, the year after a fire destroyed much of downtown Camden, in a building constructed by Edwin C. Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher had owned and operated Fletcher Apothecary next door, where the House of Logan is now. In October 1892, Elkanah E. Boynton bought the business from Mr. Fletcher, naming it E.E. Boynton Co. and one month later, the business was destroyed. The only thing saved was the complete record of prescriptions filled. During the following year, construction was completed on the buildings from the river bridge to the corner of Main and Mechanic Streets.

In May of 1999, Phil McElhaney and Susan Penner opened Boynton-McKay Food Co. keeping the bird’s eye maple fixtures and displaying the original apothecary tools and bottles. The cafè is open 6 days a week and serves breakfast, lunch and coffee where the locals love to meet and eat.

Our menu has something for almost everyone, from Mexican to Asian to Italian. There are pastas and salads and three soups a day. We have lots of wraps, available with plain or whole wheat tortillas (or wrapless for you low-carb folks!) If you’re in a hurry, our cooler has several “Grab and Go” meals to choose from every day. We’ll nuke ‘em for you or you can take them home and do it yourself.
